Steinway Pads

Pads created from the Kristiansand Steinway samples.

ByFred Poirier

The story

Ten pads created from Pete Malkin’s Kristiansand Concert Steinway Piano samples.

Reverbs, delays, Pitching up and down and glitchy tremolos were involved to create these samples.

Two main textures: Smooth and Granular, available in three different pitches (-12, 0 and +12 semitones). At the end, nine different combinaisons for all your Piano Pad needs.

There is also this quick experimentation: Falloff Pad. It begins one semitone up and slowly falls down to the desired note, then dies. Perfect for dystopian tales.

Every patch is highly modwheel sensitive.

  • This made me smile

When I first played this instrument. It will gradually change the tone colour as you play. Warm, choir like pad sound suddenly turn into a spooky pad sound. Very beautiful, and easy to play with.

  • The different face of a Steinway!

This is a lovely piano pad, and you can definitely feel the piano behind the ambience. It's not overprocessed to the point you can't tell. I found that the pitch-bend working really well on this one, you need to try it out! The only options you will find are a Reverb and a Harmony setting, which I can't figure what the latter does. I'd love to have an ADSR option, but this is not the case, and it works just right without it anyway!

  • Excellent warm pads!

These pads are warm and fuzzy, and very playable. They have some interesting harmonic content on the top end which makes them lots of fun to play and useful for scoring. The harmony control is really interesting. I'm not a huge fan of adding intervals like 4ths or 5ths, but I do find it useful to add octaves in, so I was drawn to it once I figured out what it does. Overall, this is an interesting and usable collection of pads!
