Politiki Flogera

A Greek aulos / flute with fipple end...

ByEamon

The story

While traveling in Greece, I visited a traditional music store in Athens. Unable to transport anything large like a bouzouki or laouto, I settled for this traditional flute, which became one of the better quality winds in my collection. The standard intonation is non-diatonic, meaning it is still difficult to find a practical use for in an ensemble setting, but by sampling and retuning I hope to give it a new lease on life. I tried to do the instrument justice and capture the full character by sampling every note with several RRs and velocities, as well as ornamental trills on a keyswitch. The legato version uses Robert Villwock’s WIPS scripts to add a heap of functionality such as vibrato, breath-control, and fine control of legato settings. All the standard samples have programmed loops and ADSR control that can be tweaked for a more pad-like instrument, though unfortunately the breath-control/vibrato features are not compatible with the polyphonic mode patch – named Poly tiki Flogera; apologies, I couldn’t resist. The Politiki Flogera gets its name from Konstantinopoli / Constantinople, and is a fipple flute / aulos originating among the Ancient Greek inhabitants of Asia Minor.

  • Best wind instrument by Eamon!

Overall this is an exceptionally sampled wind instrument by Eamon, and I can safely say it's perfect for what it is. One can argue that the GUI might be a little over-complicated, which I will agree, but you really don't have to use it since everything is great by default.

What I really love about this is the perfectly programmed legato out of the box. You get to have your normal nicely tuned legato that Eamon is always good at, and you also get to have retriggering legato, automatic vibrato after prolongued sustain, and an extra flair articulation. As an extra, the smartly named polyphonic patch offers full ADSR controls and sounds majestic. Excellent work by Eamon!

  • A Fab Fipple Flute!

Eamon's attention to detail is here is really great. The addition of articulations and setups breath or wind controllers really takes this to the next level.

It is a great sound, I love it with some larger reverbs but I'm certain that composers will find this sound very useful.

Thank for the contribution to the group!
